Use ‘Green Fund’ to convert telecom towers to solar: Farooq Abdullah

According to reports, batting for Green cause to curtail carbon emission and cut fuel imports at significant levels, Minister for New and Renewable Energy Farooq Abdullah, said that if the telecom towers are turned onto solar, India can save enormous amount of diesel fuel.

Speaking at the Telecom Leadership Awards 2012, organized by CyberMedia, Abdullah said that this transition has a long way to go.

“Telecom industry is transforming. We should realize the amount of diesel spend in every tower. If we turn towers to solar, we can save enormous amount of fuel,” he said. India has close to 400,000 towers of which more than 20 per cent are not even connected to power grid.

“We have created Green Fund. We want fund to be utilized in converting telecom towers to solar, wind or other energy resources. It is a challenge for all of us. We can cut fuel imports, if solar energy is utilized. There is a long way to go,” stressed Abdullah.

Green evangelist and CyberMedia’s advisor Prasanto K Roy believes that the telecom industry should move to environmentally-best practices and become less dependent on fuel imports. “Towers burn more than 2 billion litres of diesel oil every year, and this was accentuated by Greenpeace too,” Roy said.

The Economic Survey of India recently proposed that the Union government should allocate Rs 10,000 crore under the Clean Energy Fund by 2015. While the budgetary expense on green energy fund for 2012-13 is Rs 3,864.20 crore.
