Kerala State Electricity Board targets 300 MW of solar power during the 12’th plan period

According to reports, Kerala State Electricity Board is planning to lure domestic consumers using above 200 units of power a month for setting up off-grid solar power plants.

The board mooted the idea while seeking the state electricity regulatory commission’s approval for its projected revenue requirement and expected revenue from charges for the year 2013-14.

According to the board, it is planning to promote off-grid solar installation with battery backup as a possible alternate choice for meeting the power requirement of the state, especially during the peak demand hours in the evening.

“The target group is domestic consumers with monthly consumption above 200 units. KSEB with the support of the government proposes to provide generation based incentive to solar power developers, in addition to the savings attained by them through replacing the high cost grid power with the solar energy,” the board says in its proposal.

KSEB targets to add 300MW from solar during the 12th plan period. Further, KSEB proposes to establish solar photo voltaic on all government buildings with the support of the government, in addition to solar PV installation at its buildings. KSEB is also exploring the possibility of installation of solar PV at its reservoirs, open channels etc.

Sources in the board say it is not much interested in the SERC’s earlier proposal for promoting grid connected solar power units by private investors on a commercial basis. “The power charges proposed by the commission for solar energy from private investors would detrimentally affect the board’s finance, which is already in shambles,” they say.
