Surat Municipal Corporation to switch to green energy

According to reports, riding on green energy, Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) plans to meet almost 82% of its power needs from non-conventional sources by 2013-14.

The civic body plans to generate nearly 14.34 crore units from its bio-gas, wind, solar and solid waste power plants. This will help SMC save Rs 85 crore annually, from its total electricity bills of Rs 105 crore.

“To sustain infrastructure facilities like water treatment plants and sewerage plants, revenue expenditure in energy sector accounts more than 50 per cent of the total expenses. In such a situation, we need to take the maximum advantage of non-conventional means which are clean and green,” said Jatin Shah, city engineer of SMC.

At present, major five projects are already producing 22 percent of SMC’s total power requirement. These incluce 3.5 MW producing bio-gas power plant, 3 MW wind power plant at Adodar in Porbandar and 0.1 MW solar power plant.

Another wind power plant being commissioned at Bhanwad will start generation by February, which will produce 8.4 MW electricity. Also, a new plant that will generate power from solid waste will starte operations by March next year and produce 16.25 MW of electricity.

The estimated consumption of SMC in the year is pegged at 17.52 crore units.

“We have formed an action plan and it is being submitted to Central government for approval. Once we have the go ahead, we will encourage industry and residential complexes to improve environment by adopting green energy,” said Manoj Das, municipal commissioner.

SMC also plans to incentivize industries opting for green energy.
