India, Spain to finance joint research on renewable energy

According to reports, India and Spain Wednesday agreed to finance joint research projects in the area of forecasting of wind power and fabrication of cost effective solar cells.

Union Minister of New and Renewable Energy Farooq Abdullah and visiting Spanish Minister of State for Research Development and Innovation, Carmen Vela Olmo, agreed to initiate a second call for research proposals to encourage joint research and development between research institutions as well as industry groups of both the countries, an official release said.

A joint call for project proposals was published following the agreement in May, 2012 on the Indo-Spanish programme for technological cooperation in renewable energy.

Proposals can be submitted covering any aspect of renewable energy, and can involve industry and R&D institutions in both countries.

India is globally the fifth largest country in terms of wind power installed capacity.

Spain is the 4th largest producer of wind generated power and is top-ranked worldwide in terms of photovoltaic solar power capacity.
