Bengal utility plans hydro-electric, pumped storage schemes

According to reports, the West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd (WBSEDCL) has decided to put greater impetus on hydro-electric proposals in Darjeeling and pumped storage schemes in Purulia.

Pumped storage schemes in Purulia are carried out in the Ayodha Hills area of the district.

Till December 2012, the State harnessed conventional hydro power of nearly 179 MW and pumped storage facility of 900 MW. This is against an estimated conventional hydro-power potential (including canal falls) of 1,500 MW and pumped storage potential of 4,800 MW.

The State utility has already launched a detailed survey and project report for Turga Pumped Storage project (1,000 MW) and Bandhu Pumped Storage project ( 900 MW) in Purulia. DPR for both the schemes are likely to be completed by 2014-15.

In the Darjeeling district, DPR preparation activities are in the final stages of completion for Teesta Intermediate State and Teesta Low Dam project. The two projects have a capacity of 84 MW and 81 MW, respectively.

This apart, studies and preliminary investigation are on to identify the conventional hydro power potential of North Bengal and South Bengal rivers.
