According to reports, Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) has decided to replace Street lights at different places with LED in coming days as apart of energy conservation. The initial experiment will begin at pre decided places in all seven zones of the city by March. Standing committee of SMC gave a go ahead to begin the campaign that sees replacing nearly 86,000 street lights of the city. At present SMC pays more than Rs 100 crore as its electricity bills in a year.
On one side it has given stress to generate its own electricity through unconventional sources like Solar, Wind and solid waste, where as on the other side, by using modern LED , it plans to reduce it’s daily consumption.
“We have a successful experiment of LED lighting in Limbayat zone where there are 20 LEDs functioning in zone office , four outside the building and three on top of the building. The results are very good and so we have decided to go ahead.” said an official from Energy efficiency cell of SMC. Light and fire committee of SMC gave directions for the implementation of the project in the city as they feel LEDs will help CCTV cameras too. “We feel LEDs will give better quality visuals.” said Gordhan Gopani, Chairman of the committee.
