Project for heat-cooling applications for industries

According to reports, the Union Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), with support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), has initiated a project on promotion and market development of solar thermal in process heat applications in industries in India.

The project is aimed at targeting low to medium temperature range to satisfy both heating as well as cooling demand for the sector.

Assigned to Pricewaterhouse Coopers (PwC) for its execution, the overall objective of the MNRE-UNDP-GEF supported project is aimed at promoting solar-energy-based heatingôcooling through solar thermal technologies in industrial establishments to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions produced by the use of fossil fuels.

The project focusses on demonstrating technical and financial viability of solar thermal projects and enhance local manufacturing capability for industrial applications.

It also aims to achieve technical capacity development to address the need to develop a better understanding of the five main solar concentrator technologies, the performance of existing installations, markets for CST in India and development of technology application information packages.

Towards generating awareness enhancement and capacity building, 30 demonstration projects involving installation of an approximate collector area of 15,000 square metre and 60 replication projects involving the installation of an approximate collector area of 30,000 square metres will be supported.

For achieving the project objectives, PwC will hold eight seminars / workshops/ meetings along with local industrial associations in eight target States of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan, NCR, Chandigarh (Punjab, Haryana and HP) to create awareness and generate proposals on CST-based systems from the industries.

The 30 demonstration and 60 replication projects will be directly supported, installed and monitored during the 5-year project duration. The impacts due to this will be energy savings totalling 45,000 square metres of collector area which would reduce GHG emission of 39,000 tonnes of CO2 over five years.

It is expected to result in increase in new businesses or growth of the existing businesses related to CST technology applications and 10 CST technology application information packages developed, utilised and available for further CST market development support at the end of the project implementation period.

As an impact, it is expected about 30 technology package suppliers are made available to market CST technologies in India and annual CST sales to increase from around 2,000 square metres per annum in 2010 to 15,000 square metres per annum in 2016.

For the 30 demonstration projects, additional support of Rs 15 lakh will be available for DPR preparation and performance monitoring equipment and additional support towards procurement of solar field, besides the MNRE subsidy scheme. For replication projects, the support will be limited to Rs 4 lakh. Benefitting private sector will have to chip in the remaining amount.

The project team is holding first of the regional consultation workshop in Mysore on March 21 under the auspices of the Mysore Industries Association and other organisations.
