Vijayawada houses to get portable bio-gas plants

According to reports, in a few months from now the residents of Vijayawada city need not worry about the high gas prices and garbage lifting tax, if they setup the portable bio-gas plant, in their premises, that produces cooking gas from the domestic waste which includes food and organic wastes.

The municipal corporation, which aims to make Vijayawada a litter free city, took this initiation and roped in the Green Biotech India Company to build the portable biogas plant.

The company successfully exhibited the demo version of the plant; the capacities of the plant vary from one kg to thousand kg that can be easily set up in various compounds like households, hotels and apartments with reasonable cost. One kilogram of decomposed waste produces cooking gas that can be used for one hour domestically.

Speaking to this newspaper, municipal commissioner, G.S. Panda Das, said that the corporation would look into the project seriously and promote it so that maximum houses set-up these gas plants. He said a portable plant would be set up in his bungalow first to observe its working efficiency and then they would take the project into people’s homes through various promotional activities.

Having these plants in maximum residential compounds reduces the burden on the garbage treating plants that receive excess garbage. The city generates almost 550 tonnes of solid waste every day.
Setting up this plant costs around Rs 30,000 and one can avail Rs 4,000 subsidy from the Non-conventional Energy Development Corporation of Andhra Pradesh Limited (NEDCAP).
Also the corporation is likely to provide additional subsidy, in the form of discount in property tax.
